Book Shelf: Review #4

It's book review wednesday! And this time it will be me, Sofia G., that will make it. (drumss...)

Book Title: Perfume
Author: Patrick Süskind
Genre: Horror, Mystery
Book DescriptionIn the slums of eighteenth-century France, the infant Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is born with one sublime gift—an absolute sense of smell. As a boy, he lives to decipher the odors of Paris, and apprentices himself to a prominent perfumer who teaches him the ancient art of mixing precious oils and herbs. But Grenouille's genius is such that he is not satisfied to stop there, and he becomes obsessed with capturing the smells of objects such as brass doorknobs and frest-cut wood. Then one day he catches a hint of a scent that will drive him on an ever-more-terrifying quest to create the "ultimate perfume"—the scent of a beautiful young virgin. Told with dazzling narrative brillance, Perfume is a hauntingly powerful tale of murder and sensual depravity.

Review: A 4 star book.

So we pass from romance, to crime and horror. If you seen the movie, I recomend you to read the book; if you haven't seen the movie, watch it before you read it. Otherwise, you will hate the movie, which is very good, for this kind of story.

So this is an historical novel that begans in the city of lights in Europe: Paris. We are in the peak of the France richness and trifling, great dresses and wigs, great jewelery, the partys, the royalty. But we don't meet that "clean" and bright side of the society, but the dark and smelly one... Were the ground is full of dirt, and trash, and other things. That's in this nest of strange odors where we meet for the first time Grenouille, that from it's childhood always escaped from miserable faiths. He has a super power, we can call it, but that's not the way it's treated: he can smell the world in a way that nobody can. And that's how he see it and feel it.

Our plot began when this talented boy "smell"  a girl, and he loved so much that he wanted to keep the smell for him. It did not end so good... And that's when he decide to work with a perfumist to know all the techniques to create the best perfumes, and odors. Needless to say what perfume he wanted to create? He wanted to created the perfection of the smell from the human beauty. So instead of flowers, he pick girls.
It's not an horror story, in fact I believe it's a good interpretation about what are we willing to do to create our dreams, it's about humanity and flaws, it's about how hard it's to reach perfection.

The book has one thing that in the movie it's missing, that could be made with a good characterization: time. In the book we get the perception of time passing, in them movie it's like not even an year pass by.

We end with most great flaw of our human nature: when we reach our goal, most of the times we expect some much that it's not enough in the end. So, when he finished he's masterwork, he let kill himself. The end it's not the same in the book has in the movie. I loved so much more the one in the book.

My favorite part it's the description when he release the perfum to the world. I can imagine I would it be if it happens for real.
Love,
Sofia G
